New Mexico

We decided to add 4 hours to our trip and drive south. I think we made the right decision. We drove through the mountains of Colorado once in the ice. I still have grey hairs to prove that that was one of the most awful, stressful experiences ever. Coming down a mountain in an RV in pure ice is not one of my favorite things to do. We also have the issue of campgrounds not being open along the drive north. We like to stop and empty our tanks and charge or batteries at campgrounds. All that to say, we drove south through Arizona and New Mexico last night until 2am.

New Mexico is very unique. It’s very different than any other state I’ve been to. From the hundreds of wild horses you see roaming around, to the hitchhikers along the side of the road. The scenery is incredible! We slept in Albuquerque last night. When we got to the campground at 2am, it was on lockdown. The only reason we got in, was someone was leaving. We quick drove through the gate. They didn’t have our reservation info in the outdoor mailbox, like campgrounds usually do. We had to call the night security guard. He found our info and led us to our site. The place was packed.

Before arriving at the campground, last night around midnight we stopped at a gas station to fuel up. There was a Native American gentlemen filling up beside Brandon. He came over and was super friendly and joking around(which I didn’t realize at first). He said “is that your motor home?” Brandon answered yes. He said “wow! I can’t believe the Navajo let you in.” Brandon kind of just stared at him not knowing what to say. He goes “as long as you have all your shots, you’ll be fine around here.” 🤣 Like I said, I didn’t realize he was joking at first. But then he busted out laughing.

The roads are crazy around here.

Hello very narrow tunnel that caused me more grey hair. We pulled off the highway for Brandon to pee. Went to go back on, and had to drive through this gem.

When we were driving through, Caed said “Isla, this is called a holy cow.” He heard Brandon and I saying “holy cow” over and over and over. I’m very thankful we only said holy cow.

The drive is gorgeous. I wish I would have snapped a picture of some of the wild horses. I missed it every time and eventually it got dark.

I forget every time how long the drive home really is. We are driving ALL day again today. We will stay in Louisville tonight. Then we’ll finish up the drive tomorrow.
